30 Ways to Celebrate September

DiAnn Mills @DiAnnMills

I enjoy September. Nature takes a new paintbrush to the canvas of our lives in yellow, orange, green, and deep purple. With cooler temperatures and the autumn anticipation, why not celebrate every day with a sweet reminder?

  1. “That old September feeling, left over from school days, of summer passing, vacation nearly done, obligations gathering, books and football in the air.” Wallace Stegner
  2. Remember the summer days and treasure the memories.
  3. Feel the joy of cooler temps. Take an early morning walk.
  4. Inhale the scent of mums bursting with color. Add color to your front porch or landscaping with potted mums.
  5. Listen to the high school marching band rehearse for Friday night games.
  6. Taste the cider and donuts. My favorite donuts are apple cider. September seems like the best month to enjoy one or two.
  7. “Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale.” Lauren DeStefano
  8. National Grandparents Day. Whether you are a grandparent or yours are living, let them know they are appreciated and loved.
  9. Take time to change out summer decorations for fall. Enjoy the flash of color.
  10. Visit the zoo. Take lots of pics. Even the animals are glad for cooler temps.
  11. Shop at a farmer’s market. The yummy veggies and other goodies are waiting for you.
  12. National School Picture Day. We all remember our school pics. Some were good and some were not-so-good.
  13. Plan a hike. The outdoors is so good for us mentally, physically, and spiritually.
  14. “September was a thirty-days long goodbye to summer, to the season that left everybody both happy and weary of the warm, humid weather and the exhausting but thrilling adventures.” Lea Malot
  15. Attend a high school or college football game. Cheer on your favorite team!
  16. National Family and Community Day. Invite family or friends to an event or activity that encourages fun and fellowship.
  17. Drink a pumpkin latte. Make it twice as good by inviting a friend.
  18. Fall festivals are in the air! Get a head start on decorations and just plan fun.
  19. This is the perfect time for planning holiday dinners and events.
  20. Pick fresh apples and bake an apple pie or make applesauce.
  21. National Gymnastics Day. Is there a gymnast in your family? Or maybe someone who needs encouragement to be a gymnast.
  22. “Notice that autumn is more the season of the soul than of nature.” Friedrich Nietzsche
  23. List the books you want to read this fall.
  24. Visit a pumpkin patch. Take the kids or grandkids to select the perfect pumpkin. Don’t forget the photo-ops.
  25. Preserve fall leaves. Nothing compares to the vivid colors of fall leaves. These are perfect for decorating.
  26. Bike rides in September allow us to view the amazing changing of the leaves.
  27. Host a picnic. Love eating outdoors but not when it’s 90 degrees and hotter? Now is the time.
  28. Get inspired by walking the aisles of Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Let the creativity soar!
  29. Listen to music inspired by September. The walk down memory lane with words and lyrics will make you smile.
  30. “There is a time in late September when the leaves are still green, and the days are still warm, but somehow you know that it is all about to end, as if summer was holding its breath, and when it let it out again, it would be autumn.” -Sharyn McCrumb

  1. I LOVE the fall, but then I love every season. Each has its appeal. However, I’ve felt cooler mornings this week and its been refreshing on my early walks. I will try these suggestions – the hikes, the cider and football games. A pumpkin latte will be my reward for reaching my writing goals in September. My fall decorations are waiting to be opened and refreshed. I’ve already been looking at DIY sites for new inspiration. Our grandson’s third birthday and our wedding anniversary is in October – fun celebrations to look forward to this fall.

So much to look forward to. So much fun to change seasons and embrace all the wonder that those changes bring.

    Thank you, DiAnn!

    1. Hi Karen, I do enjoy all the seasons too, but fall always fills me with excitement. Perhaps the colors – since I can’t wear pinks and purples of spring and summer. Neither can I wear red at Christmas, but bring on the orange, gold, and fall!

  2. Hello
    Cider and donuts
    Sign me up!
Best memories going to the orchard and picking fresh juicy apples .
Ohios best! Then making fresh cider, and grabbing some warm donuts at the County Fair!! Yeah autumn!

  3. You mentioned going to Hobby Lobby or Michaels – these are great places to get some creative decorating ideas for the fall.

I agree with you. Fall is also my favorite time of the year and even better, football season begins.

    1. Linda, smiling here! My sons played football and now my grandson. I got so tired of 100 degree temps in Houston that I started bringing out the fall decorations. Hasn’t helped the temps but my attitude is better. 🙂

  4. Open the front door and say, “Thank You Lord, for this glorious day.” Then, go to the back door and repeat. I do this every morning. 🙂 September is my birthday month so I have extra “thanksgiving” to give the Lord. 🙂
