Recently I posted on Facebook the question: What is the best part of getting older? Within two minutes of pressing post, I had comments. The responses were varied, and I giggled at many of them. Here’s the ranked list:
- Grandkids (This one was mentioned the most. In my opinion, there is a reason they are called grand!)
- Being more confident in my own skin.
- God really is in control, and you can stop fretting.
- Alive and healthy
- Enjoying retirement and all the benefits.
- Learning from your mistakes
- Wisdom
- Naps
- Closer to heaven
- Not having to take your shoes off at the airport
- Body protests
- Shaking off some pride and realizing what a mess I really am. It’s deepened my faith journey and made me less likely to judge harshly.
- Slowing down
- Anytime you’re at an event, and you really don’t feel like being there, you can get up and leave saying I’m tired.
What about you? What one(s) above suited you, or do you have a different best part of getting older?

What a Great list! My husband and I don’t have grandchildren, God willing maybe someday, but I love the list. I have learned to be comfortable in my own skin, say no to things that I don’t want or need to do, and I love # 9. I am looking forward to a great Heavenly reunion someday. I also like that I can slow down, take stock of what’s important in my life and enjoy it!
Valerie, Being comfortable in our own skin is something I wish I’d embraced when I was much younger. Yes! Number 9 is the most perfect item on the list. Thanks for commenting.
Without hesitation, I say wisdom. I have sadly learned (and mostly from my own behaviors that being older, is not necessarily wiser, after witnessing situations where youth portrayed more wisdom than older people) Overall, however, wisdom blooms as I get oder, and that is a blessing. For example, situations which would instigate anger even a year ago, now awaken prayerful concern.
Frances, spiritual maturity makes God smile and draws others to our faith. I love your wisdom.
What a fun list! And yes, GRANDS tops my list right now, though there are many many other things that I can relate to and are spot on. (Still waiting to master the naps thing.)
Kristine, Grands let us relive the love and fun we had with their parents.
A lot of friends my age or older are with Jesus. I miss them, but know I will see them again one day.
Linda, it will be a glorious reunion.
The older I am, the more I learn. I thank God for giving me wisdom in some areas and for forgiving me when I fail in other areas. 🙂
Melissa, God knows what we need. I’m thankful to keep learning.
I make sure to schedule any activities so I don’t have to set the alarm.
Sue, Great suggestion! Thanks.
I agree with most of this list, especially being able to say “no” to events without reason.
I am looking forward to seeing you in Webster!
Thanks, Sheila, I’m looking forward to seeing you too!
All those reasons are good. I think a lot depends on where you are on the “Older” scale. It also depends on how many aches and pains you might have.
For me, and maybe for most of us, I think the best answer is 9: Closer to heaven! That is the ultimate goal in this life, isn’t it? The older we are, the closer we are to finishing the race and receiving the our crown!
Tim, closer to heaven is a huge comfort. Sometimes I think I’m selfish by wanting that peace and love with my God. Other times I know He has me here until I’ve completed my purpose.
I like #9 — every day I’m one step closer to my Creator.
Oh, and I love the fact that I don’t need an excuse for anything I do — I’m old!
Kay, I find that I can get out of doing a lot of things by claiming I’m old!
1) Knowing, really knowing Gods got my back, my
my not so steady hands, and my aching feet.
2) Now orthopedic shoes really are cute and come in different colors.
3) The grands…they bring so much joy and laughter.
4) If you can’t hold it in any longer and pass gas in public, who gives a hoot.
Dawn, you are hilarious! Love these and thanks so much.
Dawn, I got a GOOD laugh on # 4…:~))
Vondia,
Peanuts is one of my fave snacks. I like them mixed together with raisins. But, soon I’m gonna have them pass them up. I pop all over the place. Not good😂
Dawn, what a problem!
Dawn:
:~)) :~)) :~)) :~))
Thanks for the good laughter today….Proverbs says it does good like a medicine :~))
So did I. And it’s true.
Even as I write this, I am holding my third grand l-girl who just turned three months on August 15. She was born prematurely on May 15, weighing 3 lbs. 14 oz. She is now over 10 pounds and doing great. This and being comfortable in my own skin are my favorite parts of getting older!🩵🩷💚
Oh, Maureen, how wonderful. Love Love Love grandkids. And yes, being confident in who we are is #2.
