I’ve read many definitions of what the rhythm of life means. For some, it’s how we handle the ebb and flow of our life’s journey, the method of handling triumphs and tragedies. Another definition focuses on how we approach our purpose, victories, and challenges. Some term it as an individual pattern based on our lifestyles, faith, culture, likes, dislikes, health, education, emotions, monetary possessions, aesthetic appreciation, and the list goes on. Every definition expands on how we move through the journey of life.
The rhythms of life are ever-changing. We experience the mountain peaks and valleys, joys and sorrows, victories and defeats and choose how those happenings affect us. Unrest always seems to follow high points, as though we don’t deserve to be happy.
Fears challenge our courage and stamina. Do we embrace life’s rhythm or do we give up and use a metronome to dictate every step?
If our rhythms are always the same, how will we learn to walk through the next fire or accept the next reward? How can we claim a satisfying life without experiencing all that can be encountered?
Your rhythm and mine are unique. We set a pace to the cadence of our heart and either crawl, walk, or march forward.
How can we face the ever-changing rhythms of life with faith and optimism?
- Practice prayer—our best defense against the struggles we will face.
- Listen to music—the sounds calm our bodies, minds, and spirits.
- Meditate on Scripture for wisdom and guidance.
- Read poetry.
- Journey through nature.
- Exercise to relieve stress.
- Engage in a hobby.
- Spend a few days away from home to recharge.
- Turn off social media.
- Give of yourself.

Thanks for this article/post. You state very clearly those resources available which can help us clear our heads when the path we’re traveling takes an unexpected turn. Each time I choose to avail myself of such aids, I realize that yielding to the Lord’s will does not mean I’ve lost my ability to choose. As long as we remain on earth in body, I believe He expects us to receive the resources He has provided and to make good choices about using them. I know I often fail miserably at allowing myself to “feel better” by changing my direction. Why it that? Those resources are not luxuries we think we shouldn’t need or don’t deserve. Using them consciously and wisely by choice may very well be a witness to His provision – so I must remind myself to receive and use those enjoyable gifts and share the joy I receive with others. May you be enriched as you continue to write.
Judy, thank you for your beautiful words of insight and wisdom. Those unexpected turns are never pleasant, and yet we fight what God has given us to relieve the stress.
THE RHYTHM OF LIFE means I go with life’s flow: joy, smiles, sadness, tears, happiness, sorrow, grief, surprise, embarrassments, disappointment, ageing- whatever comes each day. There are four seasons in the year. Each has its perks and frustrations. I cannot avoid them, instead, I dress the part to deal with each.
Thinking, and talking about it is easier than facing it, but just like I welcome the perks- the highs, so
must expect lows: frustrations, pain, downturns, and failures.
I am discovering that it is difficulties that produce, and promote growth. It has taken a while for me to grasp this, and I am still the process, of moving to the rhythms.
Frances, your words depict this old world’s rhythm. but the day will come when all our woes will be joy.
