I love to bake. There’s something about creating a sweet treat for those I love that fills me with satisfaction. Baking with my grandchildren is incredibly rewarding. We build our relationship while learning skills—measuring, reading recipes, what different ingredients do for the finished product, how to break eggs, using a rolling pin, setting the timer on the oven, and a whole lot of other things while having fun.
Sharing my joy of baking with others has inspired family-time ideas that I want to pass along to you. I hope you take the opportunity to inspire family baking and cooking moments that last long past the month of February.
- A friend in Colorado told me about her family’s monthly activity of having each member prepare a dessert for board game night. The family votes on the best treat. Lots of memory-making moments with this family.
- My nephew and his daughter love to bake and cook. Once a week they choose special recipes, and the rest of the family votes on what sounds the most appetizing. Although an entire meal is being prepared, dessert is often the highlight. Father and daughter are establishing a loving and respectful relationship, giving to others, and discovering cooking/baking techniques.
- Last summer my granddaughter visited for a week. She went through all my cookbooks and wrote down what desserts she wanted to make for “Pops.” He chose his favorites, and we prepared one each night. She also designed the presentation, and Pops took pics so we’d always have the memory.
- Pinterest has several recipes and colorful inspirations with the search of “Family Baking Ideas.” Yummy images make the recipes more inviting.
- Holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions provide an opportunity for families to put aside their electronics and enjoy each other’s company.
- One Christmas, the grand-kids gathered to make sugar cookies. First we made the dough. While it chilled, I set up three workstations with stools, waxed paper, plenty of flour, rolling pins, and cookie cutters. We laughed until our sides ached. Each child had his/her own baking sheet. When the cookies were baked and cooled, the three took to their workstations again and decorated their creations. We took lots of pics, and the cookies that weren’t eaten went home with the little bakers.
- This website is dedicated to Make Healthy Baked Goods Together. Lots of great recipes!
In today’s busy world, we often neglect what makes families thrive. Take time to connect with loved ones, and a fun way is through baking together.
How do you bond with your family?
