The pandemic and resulting social distancing have sent many of us indoors to work and play. One of the advantages of the times is the charm of board games. While the purpose of staying inside is to fight the spread of COVID and remain healthy, these moments together help us capture the art of non-technical fun.

I experienced how board games brought my family closer together. So, I did a little research to see what experts say about the growing popularity. Below is a combined list of my discoveries:

  1. Brings family and friends closer together and build relationships.
  2. Establishes the art of goal setting and teamwork.
  3. Increases communication skills and built the player’s vocabulary.
  4. Urges participants to laugh.
  5. Lowers blood pressure.
  6. Improves brain function.
  7. Decreases stress levels.
  8. Pulls people away from digital screens and into the real world.
  9. According to Health Fitness Revolution, board games reduce the effects of mental disease, enhances child development, and are therapeutic.
  10. Just plain fun with little or no cost.

To be fair, I looked for disadvantages to board games.

  1. Limits the number of players.
  2. Age limit may exclude young children.
  3. Provokes the competitive-typed to quarrels.
  4. Can be boring or take a long time to play.

Note, more pros than cons!

Of course, I have my top 5 favorites!

  1. Wits and Wager Family
  2. What Do You Meme? Family Edition.
  3. Sequence
  4. Many card games
  5. The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Game (Are you surprised?)

Do I have a personal dislike? Yep, Monopoly. Please accept my apologies if you are addicted to this game.

We all have games we love. What is yours?
