Smiling Takes the Bite out of Stress

By DiAnn Mills @DiAnnMills

This is not an article on ways remove stress from your life. Neither am I offering an instructional guide to eliminating stress by getting organized, exercising more, eating nutritionally sound, praying more, learning to say no, journaling your feelings, seeking counseling, taking prescription meds, or exploring the many ways to reduce stress.

There are plenty of self-help books and articles on managing stress out there, and if you are suffering from stress, then take advantage of the help that is available.

In the meantime, let me put a smile on your face with these twelve quotes about the foolishness of stress.

  1. “A smile cures the wounding of a frown.” – William Shakespeare
  2. “The man who smiles when things go wrong has thought of someone to blame it on.” – Robert Bloch
  3. “Don’t take life too seriously! Nobody gets out alive anyway. Smile. Be goofy. Take chances. Have fun. Inspire.” – Dawn Gluskin
  4. “I try to take it one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.” – Ashleigh Brilliant
  5. “There cannot be a crisis next week. My schedule is already full.” – Henry Kissinger
  6. “We must have a pie. Stress cannot exist in the presence of a pie.” – David Mamet
  7. “When I look back on all these worries, I remember the story of the old man who said on his deathbed that he had had a lot of trouble in his life, most of which had never happened.” – Winston Churchill
  8. “Stress is nothing more than a socially acceptable form of mental illness.” – Richard Carlson
  9. “Stress is when you wake up screaming and realize you haven’t fallen asleep yet.” – Steve Valentine
  10. “If you say you never stress, be careful, ‘cause your nose will grow and you would truly have something to stress about.” – DiAnn Mills
  11. “Brain cells create ideas. Stress kills brain cells. Stress is not a good idea.” – Arthur Frederick Saunders
  12. “Stress is an enemy that attaches itself to the mind and assumes control. The problem is we end up believing it.” – DiAnn Mills
We can redirect our lives to avoid unnecessary stress, and I encourage you evaluate your life and seek out the priorities of God, family, work, and friends.  Don’t forget to smile!

  1. I’m usually humming a Christian song or singing one silently. That puts the joy of the Lord in me, so I’m smiling a lot. I look at people all the time and I see a lot of people with dazed looks. When I’m smiling, they smile back. I hope that it’s not because my hair is sticking up or I’m looking goofy but that they are reciprocating the smile that I gave to them. To eliminate stress, I choose to make it my mission to praise God and smile more so others will see Jesus in me and that in turn will make them smile. Was it Lawrence Welk who used to say, Keep a song in your heart? Let that song be a song that glorifies God.

    1. Marlena, thank you for sharing your way of not only eliminating stress in yourself but an encouragement for others to smile, and give their burdens to Jesus.

You’ve given us a godly roadmap!

  2. You know, the smile is important, but like Dawn mentioned there are a lot of fake smiles. When I see a person smile, I always look at the eyes. The eyes don’t lie. DYK:

According to Psychology Today, the eyes tell us the emotional state of a person.
    • Worried or sad people furrow their brows which makes the eyes look smaller.
    • Cheerful people raise their eyebrows making their eyes appear bigger and brighter.
    • There’s another physical aspect to our eye’s appearance and that is our heart rate. Whether from joy, fear, interest, or other emotional engagement, our pupils will dilate. Which also can make our eyes appear larger.
So, we can fake a smile, even raise our eyebrows in an attempt to elevate the smile to our eyes, but we can’t dilate our pupils. What is in our heart will be reflected, literally, in our eyes.

  3. #2 and #10 are my favorites. Thanks for sharing this.

I’ll smile a lot today to help get rid of the stress of building a new home. It’s been a long 18 months. Almost finished!

  4. A smile is refreshing. Happy faces roll out the red carpet and welcome warmth.
I remember in grade school being told to smile as we waited to say our speeches before an audience. Can you imagine impatient and nervous children trying to remember their lines in addition to managing fake smiles for what seemed like eons? I was tired from smiling, but it was an unspoken rule back in the day. Today I don’t try and smile. Its effortless when the peace of God and joy reigns in your soul. I want that same smile to hug people and age well in the patina of my life.
