As November ushers in the chill, the fireplace and a good book call to us. What are you reading? Fiction? Nonfiction? Poetry? Articles? Let’s share our excitement and recommend books to one another.
I’ll go first!
Nonfiction
Every morning, before the sun rises, I read:
- ESV Bible
- Praying the Psalms: Experiencing Scripture-Fed, Spirit-Led, Worship-Based Prayer by Daniel Henderson
- Life Is Hard. God Is Good. Let’s Dance. by Brant Hanson. Everyday happenings, sometimes sobering and sometimes humorous, woven together with God’s Word.
- The Way of Worship: A Guide to Living and Leading Authentic Worship by Michael Neale and Vernon M. Whaley. An excellent read for all creatives.
Books on Writing
- Crafting Story Movement: Techniques to Engage Readers and Drive Your Novel Forward by Kathryn Craft. Outstanding tips on emotion, conflict, and realism.
- Sacred Moments: The Spiritual Life of a Writer by Steve Laube. This book isn’t just for writers. It offers scriptural insight into the creative mind.
Fiction
- The One Who Felt Like Home by Tammy Karasek. Tammy’s debut novella is well done, with just the right pacing and emotion.
- Hunted but Not Alone: Eight On-the-Run Christian Romantic Suspense Stories by eight of my favorite authors!
- Eruption by James Patterson and Michael Crichton. Wow! “Fast-paced and deeply considered … A cinematic story rooted in science and infused with plenty of heart, tackling big themes like love and loss.” —Time
To Be Read
- The River by Michael Neale
- The rest of my TBR pile is too tall to list!

Paula, you are reading a lot of books! I need to add to my TBR pile!
Just finished The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass by Katie Powner. She is great at developing characters that are so real they could be my friends! I’m on chapter three of One Day Gone by Luana Ehrlich.
Thanks, Gail. Sounds like two great books to read!
I, too, read the ESV every morning. I just started reading In These Hills by Tamera Alexander.
My favorite read this year? It’s hard to pick one, but I did enjoy This Promised Land, by Cathy Gohlke, very much.
Hi Martha, you read great writers – and friends too. Thanks for sharing!
I just downloaded The Way of Worship and am eager to start it. I am currently reading a devotional Spiritual Lessons I’ve Learned from Teaching Pottery by Lottie Carter. Lottie is the daughter of one of my good friends.
I am currently looking for recommendations for future reading.
Thanks, Cindy, those books and writers mentioned on this page are outstanding! Let me know what genre, and I’ll recommend a few.
