Serving Up Peanut Butter!

By DiAnn Mills @DiAnnMills

I’m a peanut butter lover.  Always have been. I eat the creamy variety of this delicious and nutritious, protein booster every day. Sometimes more than once in a day.

When I was sixteen years old, my dad wrapped a case of peanut butter and placed it under the Christmas tree. As I’ve grown older, I switched to the organic type with no added sugar or oils. Does that tell you anything? And if you’re allergic to peanuts, you have my sympathy—SunButter (made from sunflower seeds) is a great substitute.

I know there’s a hefty amount of fat here, but can we get excited about the great protein and fiber? Here’s the scoop (spread):

  • Calories: 200.
  • Protein: 8 grams.
  • Total fat: 17 grams.
  • Saturated fat: 2.5 grams.
  • Carbs: 7 grams.
  • Fiber: 3 grams.
  • Sugar: 1 gram.

The healthiest peanut butter is the kind we make ourselves with a food processor. Totally yum. This recipe is really good and easy, but I don’t personally add oil or sweetener.

A few of my books have characters who share the same enthusiasm So I think it’s about time I shared some of the many ways to “spread” the word.

My favorites!

  • Peanut Butter from a jar with a large spoon
  • Peanut Butter on wholewheat toast with honey
  • Peanut Butter, mayo, tomato, and dill pickle sandwiches
  • Peanut Butter with chocolate: in chocolate chip cookies, cakes, pancakes, muffins, waffles, pie, and pudding. Did I miss anything?
  • Peanut Butter French Toast
  • Peanut Butter and ice cream
  • Peanut Butter pie
  • Peanut Butter and oatmeal
  • Peanut Butter atop cornbread (consider a little syrup or honey)
  • Peanut Butter and apple slices
  • Peanut Butter and bananas
  • Peanut Butter and chocolate-dipped strawberries
  • Peanut Butter coated chocolate bar
  • Peanut Butter added to a smoothie.
  • Reese Cups!

Other ways!

  • Peanut Butter and celery
  • Peanut Butter pretzels
  • Peanut Butter humus
  • Peanut Butter and vanilla yogurt
  • Peanut Butter in milkshakes
  • Peanut Butter popcorn

I haven’t tried these but I’ve been told they are amazing …

  • Peanut Butter on pizza
  • Peanut Butter and pork
  • Peanut Butter in chili
  • Peanut Butter in baked chicken
  • Peanut Butter in salad dressings
  • Peanut Butter in pasta
  • Peanut Butter in many Asian dishes

This site shows every state’s most popular peanut butter dish. Check for your state’s favorite. I also roast raw almonds and use my food processor to make almond butter, but I’ll save details on that for another day 🙂

What is your favorite way to enjoy peanut butter?

    1. My go-to is peanut butter on a cinnamon-raisin bagel, or as a dip for apple slices. I’ll have to try some of these new ideas–yum!

  1. Used to have to hide it from our (adult) daughter who’d go days without touching a carb but swallow peanut butter by the spoonful. Now . . . am tempted, but restrain.

  2. I love Peanut Butter and usually have more than one jar in my cabinet. I think you left off Peanut Butter Fudge, I like more than the Chocolate Fudge.

  3. My sons, even now on their own, will put peanut butter on flour tortillas and roll them up for a snack.
I like a bowl of peanut butter and dip cheddar cheese into it.

    1. Thanks, Bonnie, I eat peanut butter or flour tortillas and roll them up! but I haven’t tried cheddar cheese. Thanks – sounds good.

  4. I use almond butter in all the places where one would use peanut butter. I also use the sugar free, no oil version. A couple of my favorites not mentioned above…. peanut butter on thick sliced bacon. Peanut butter on a 70% chocolate bar (similar version listed above). 2 Chocolate Chip cookies w peanut butter sandwiched in between.

  5. Pickled jalapeños stuffed with peanut butter are totally amazing! I didn’t believe it until I tried it – one bite and I was sold!

  6. I LOVE Peanut butter!! Anyway with chocolate is best. I make a Reese’s peanut butter banana bread with Mimi Reese peanut butter cups inside, so good!!
