July 28 – National Milk Chocolate Day

By DiAnn Mills @DiAnnMills

Today is National Milk Chocolate Day, that sweet, fat-laden, delicious treat that we learned to love as kids. I’m not talking about dark chocolate or the healthy varieties that provide a percentage of the real thing. I’m referring to what many of us eat behind closed doors where no one monitors the amount of comfort food we ingest.

Besides milk chocolate tasting incredibly good, studies indicate that anything dark chocolate can do, milk chocolate can do too …just to a lesser degree. Oh, it has calcium, which means an additive to our teeth and bones.

If you’re interested in the history of milk chocolate, this site digs deeper into the story behind Daniel Peter and Henry Nestle. It even offers a Chocolate Candy Bar Cake recipe.

Taste of Home offers us 29 Milk Chocolate Recipes.

Let’s be honest, friends.

Most of us love milk chocolate. We eat our veggies so we can indulge. Some of us limit our calorie intake to enjoy this flavorful food or save a day of the week to treat ourselves. Milk chocolate makes our mouth water. Who doesn’t have fond memories of chocolate? Yet doctors advise us to consume with moderation. Too much of a good thing can be unhealthy.

But today is special!

Have a great day. Me? I’m going to bite into a mouth-watering milk chocolate bar. What is your favorite way to enjoy milk chocolate?

  1. My two oldest grandchildren benefited from your reminder! They both had chocolate shakes and thoroughly enjoyed themselves! I’m sure the date will be added to the calendar as a reminder for next year!

  2. When I lived in Switzerland, there was a whole aisle in the grocery store for the wide variety of milk chocolate bars. Back in the States, I honestly prefer a lot of dark chocolate options. However, Trader Joe’s sells a chocolate milk made with fair trade cocoa and it is a delicious hot or cold treat!

    1. Hi Michelle, I am a Trader Joe fan, so I will check out the milk chocolate bar. Thanks! If I lived in Sweden, I’d gain 50 pounds!

  3. I have to watch it. One tough truth in life, is: what is good for us, abounds in tastelessness, while what is not 100% good, sizzles with taste. I thank God for sugarless orange marmalade, and some Berry jams without sugar. I put these on dark- not- a- mite- of sugar chocolate, and pretend it is milk chocolate I am eating. Not bad at all, although one eye stays on the milk chocolate.

    1. Frances, in heaven we won’t have to count calories or worry about health issues. 🙂 Take care, my friend.

  4. I’m lucky…my next door neighbor keeps chunk chocolate chip cookies in the cookie jar. I visit every day and have a cookie and a cup of coffee (with lots of creamer). I have to avoid snacking at home but it’s worth it.

  5. What a great start to my day! I especially love Hershey bars, either the plain milk chocolate or with almonds. My husband likes to buy me See’s chocolate on all special occasions, but really, I’m bought more cheaply with the ordinary grocery store variety. I also love the Nestles chips made into Toll House cookies. And yes, I limit my intake and plan ahead with veggie intake.

  6. I don’t need an excuse. I love milk chocolate- not the milk but the candy bar. I like dark chocolate too. The problem is that my husband has decided he no longer likes MILK chocolate, just dark, so if I choose to buy a bag of fun size, it is obvious I am the only one eating them since our kids are grown. Actually, my favorite way to enjoy chocolate is by making salted bittersweet choc chip cookies!

    1. Jeanne, so glad you have your own stash of milk chocolate. My 13 year old granddaughter asked for salted chocolate chip cookies – yummy. Haven’t tried the bittersweet variety – yet!
