I love quotes—the echoes of life reflected into our world to admire, respect, contemplate, or simply enjoy. When words are arranged to pack a punch with insightful meaning, I’m excited and inspired. I have favorites about life, family, friends, faith, and of course writing, and I’d like to share some of those with you today.
“Never, never, never give up.” Winston Churchill.
This speaks volumes into every area of my life: faith, family, friends, and writing.
“Life is an adventure, it’s not a package tour.” Eckhart Toole
Who wants to spend their time on earth bored? I want to experience it all.
“It’s a fact of earthly life that when God opens the windows of heaven to bless us, the devil opens the doors of hell to blast us. When God begins moving, the devil fires up all his artillery.” Adrian Rogers
Always be prepared for unexpected twists and turns in life.
“We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties.” Oswald Chambers
This is a keeper when chaos knocks on my front door.
“Be STILL and know that I am God.” Psalms 46:10 ESV
Enough said.
“To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.” Mother Teresa
This is a great reminder when I’m running on empty.
“But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15 ESV
No compromise in this area.
“A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.”
I love my 2:00 a.m. friends because I keep the same time zone.
“You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.” Jack London
There are days I need a club, machete, and a machine gun.
“Write what disturbs you, what you fear, what you have not been willing to speak about. Be willing to be split open.” Natalie Goldberg
I can’t write a solid story unless I’m willing to be transparent to my reader. A sure-fire formula for a bestseller.

One of my favorite quotes this year, that I look at every day is from a Christian author now home with the Lord:
“Father, help me to remember that no matter the melody of my life, You are the composer of my days…” -Diann Hunt
I love that quote – and Diann Hunt was an awesome lady.
These are really good. Thanks for sharing. I do have a favorite pithy proverb. It’s stuck with me, not because overwhelming inspiration, but because I didn’t understand it. After mulling it over on various occasions, I’ve grown to deeply cherish its meaning. “I could not love thee, Dear, so much, loved I not honor more. ” Richard Lovelace
Dianne, sweet quote and definitely words to cherish.
There are a lot of good quotes; for a season I will have one favorite and another season a different quote. Right now I have 2 that I have been quoting: Phil 4:19 that God will supply all my need according to his glorious riches and Eph 3:20 that God is able to accomplish more than I can ask or think.
Hi Melanie, that is a good choice.
Hi Marriana, Scripture always provides us the best guidance. Thanks!
While rearing my sons, I told them
“Things aren’t important but people are. Be kind. ”
Being fond of Mark Twain, Oswald Chambers and C. S. Lewis it would be remiss if me not to include my favorites from them.
“Men who don’t read good books have no advantage over the man who can’t.” Mark Twain
“Never let the sense of failure corrupt your new action.” Oswald Chambers
“Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make a man a more clever devil.” C S Lewis
Each of these quotes has fed me at different points or parts of my life both personally and professionally.
However, these pale in comparison to one of my favorite, most supportive, encouraging verse in the Bible: Phillipians 4:13
Hi Linda,
What beautiful quotes to raise your sons and live by. Thanks!
“A draft to a novelist is what a lump of clay is to the sculptor. Every novel begins with an imperfect draft. Once the draft is in hand, the writing can begin.” From Daily Writing Tips, Nov. 5, 2013. It’s taken me a few years to realize that my first draft is just that, and is the groundwork to use before the actual novel is written.
Marilyn, what a great quote. I hope you plan to share that at the conference.
When I taught school I used to tell my high school students “There are no mistakes, only learning experiences.”
My 2 favorite quotes are
“Life is tough and it is even tougher when you act stupid.”
“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”
Great quotes! Words to live by.
Here’s one I saw on Facebook today: “I have never been hurt by what I have not said.” Calvin Coolidge
Ruthe, That’s a great one for us to think before we speak. Thanks!
One of my favorite quotes of all time is “A sorrow shared is but half a trouble, but a joy shared is a joy made double.” That always encourages me.
Hi Faith – I think your quote is biblical. Thanks!
I only write when I’m inspired. Fortunately, I’m inspired every morning at 9:00 a.m.
~ William Faulkner
For some of us, we need to be inspired at 4:00 a.m.
Henry, I’m laughing. Yes – success begins at 4:00 a.m.!
“Dropkick as needed.”. Advice from a friend when my computer was acting up years ago, but I’ve found that it works for life, too!
Lynn, love it! Thanks
“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars” -Oscar Wilde
Hi Katie, cool quote – but then again it’s Oscar Wilde.
These are great! I start my Basic Writing class with positive quotes! I will be using them. Thank you!
Hi Jessica, glad all of us could help!
These are great! Very good reminders.
Thank you!
The 23rd psalm is always a comfort….and of course, Winston Churchill’s famous quote…I can listen to that voice over and over again and be inspired…
Kathleen, to me, inspiration comes in how ever God ordains it. 🙂
When I was in medical school, we used to sarcastically quote Ecclesiastes 12:12 when we were studying at 2 AM–And furthermore, my son, of this be admonished. Of the making of many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness to the flesh.
But as I went along my Christian journey, I came to anchor myself (seriously) on Romans 8:38-39. And in times of trouble (and there were a lot), it was comforting to know the nothing could separate me from God’s love.
Richard, I love those. I keep telling myself that one day I’ll memorize Romans 8.
Romans 8 is chock full of Truth! might very well be my favorite chapter in the Bible.
my quote, though, is “What if I fail? Oh, but my darling what if you fly?” attributed to Erin Hanson
My go to verse when overwhelmed is “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
Also:
We can’t control what over people do but we can control how we react. We have to live with our actions and decisions. No certain author(s)
Gloria, such wisdom and comfort in those verses. Thank you!
Pastor Robert Engelhardt of the Catskill Mountain Christian Center, author, radio talk show host and a man who uses common folk talk to make God’s Word known to mankind says this in his testimony.
During late night work in his father’s printing shop, he goes down to the basement where no one else is around. He kneels on a pallet and says, “God, if you’re real, I want to experience you. The next thing I know, Ba-da-boom! His presence is all over me.”
Hi Warren, I love that story! Quotes and Scripture are reminders that we aren’t alone.
Your quotes are both realistic and uplifting!! Here’s one of my favs: And God is able to make ALL grace abound toward you, that you, ALWAYS having ALL sufficiency in ALL things, may have an abundance for EVERY good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8 NKJV (all caps are mine….to get me through any circumstance!)
Hi Melanie
Oh, thank you. Yes always with God, the faithful One. Be blessed!
Oh my gosh that’s my favourite quote too.
Sorry got super excited I was referring to the Winston Churchill quote – just saw that you had more than one
I knew which one you meant. 🙂
Since it came from a Brit – I’m not surprised!
