August Quotes to Help Endure the Heat

DiAnn Mills @DiAnn Mills

August has arrived, and the month is filled with summer passing by in fleeting moments of vacation and relaxation. We sense a twinge of regret and an anticipation for a new season. As I’m writing this, it’s 100 degrees outside and the heat index is 115. Even the pool water is warmer than a bathtub. I’m one who loves the heat soaking through to my bones, but that ends at 95 degrees.

There are many quotes to help us embrace the mixed feelings of entering the hottest month of the year.

Enjoy this mix of quotes commemorating August

  • “June and July were just practice for this sweat.”
  • “This morning, the sun endures past dawn. I realize that it is August: the summer’s last stand.” Sara Baume
  • “Breathe the sweetness that hovers in August.” Denise Levertov
  • “August: Like July, but it yells at you.”
  • “It was August, and the fields were high with corn.” Melanie Gideon
  • “The month of August had turned into a griddle where the days just lay there and sizzled.” The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
  • “No one can believe that God is not good when the August gardens are in their heyday.”
    Gladys Taber
  • “The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning.” Natalie Babbitt
  • “Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it.” Russell Baker
  • “Show me a summer without a captivating finale like August, the beauty of sun-kissed flowers, a choir of birds, and sweet memories of cool lakes and forever friends.” DiAnn Mills
  • “I love borders. August is the border between summer and autumn; it is the most beautiful month I know.” Tove Jansson
  • Time to pretend we love the heat while secretly longing for fall.
  • “When summer gathers up her robes of glory, and like a dream of beauty glides away.”
    Sarah Helen Whitman
  • “Live in the sunshine. Swim in the sea. Drink in the wild air.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

  1. My husband and I sing in a large Christian community choir. We are also the music librarians. Our first rehearsal begins in mid-August. So, we must gather the songs we are singing for the Fall concerts and prepare folders for all the members. So, for us August begins the Fall season.

  2. Hi DiAnn,
    I love this quote:
(“Time to pretend we love the heat while secretly longing for fall.”)
among your many August quotes because autumn is my favorite season.
With that said, August finds us celebrating our 55th wedding anniversary and our oldest son’s 48th birthday. So, August holds lots of sweet memories along with the AZ desert heat and the longing for Autumn.
    Blessings, Kathleen

  3. Swiss Independence Day is on August 1st. We celebrate because my Dad was from Switzerland. We got together with the local Swiss Club and ate bratwurst, potato salad, shredded carrot salad, rolls, and a soda called Rivella. The kids had a mini-parade with lanterns.

  5. July 4th marked a good corn crop if it was knee high. I’m wondering if right now that corn is just popping on the stalk??
    It’s certainly hot enough to.
    Keep cool thoughts!!

      1. Swimming in the pool! Okay, okay, floating in the pool. And picking fresh veggies from the garden. This year, we have tomatoes, cucumbers. bell peppers, basil, rosemary, chives, and strawberries!

  6. Yes, it’s very hot here in Alabama! My husband and I got married August 28. I had always wanted to be married in October (fall is my favorite) but when he finally “proposed” I quickly planned an August wedding! The 28th we will have been married 45 years.

  7. This year I will enjoy for August to end. It has been a real sizzle. I usually enjoy being out in the sunshine in the garden and just enjoying my backyard and the birds. August brings the harvest of summer’s toil. It is always so beautiful and bountiful. God is good to us, all the time.

  8. Back to school supply shopping! While I never got a new box of crayons every year for school, I loved looking at all those colors. This time of year continued through my daughter’s school days and now to our oldest grandchild entering Pre-K in September. Plus, I scan the sales for anything I can use for my writing needs.
Keeps the child in me alive.

    1. Dawn, I have this quote printed on a black and white reprint of a snow-covered park in winter. I bring it out during the winter months to be warmed by memories of summer.

  9. August is the top of the year; February is the bottom (it used to be the last month). But as compensation, February has Groundhog Day, Valentines Day, and the birthdays of great Presidents with a total of eleven federally recognized holidays.

  10. My favorite part of August is the birthday celebrations of three family members. Birthday stone for August is Peridot: The primary modern birthstone, known for its distinct lime to olive-green color and nicknamed the “gem of the sun”.
