A Writer’s Workspace

desk 2Is your workplace special to you? Many times I’ve been asked where I write. The answer is anywhere, yet I do have a designated office, a room where bits and pieces of me are scattered throughout. I’d like to share a few photos with you today.

Okay, so my desk is slightly messy. Oh, do I love the two computer screens.

chandelier 2Yep, I do have a chandelier above my desk. It’s my girly spot.

The view behind my chair is filled with this and that stuff. I have more books than I know what to do with, but I didn’t show you those. Note, several books are stashed away in boxes.cuffs

My FBI corner inspires me to write suspense. One of my treasured possession is the coffee mug in the shape of a gun. Every writer needs a touch of … their kind of story.

The African shelf is special because of my heart for Southern Sudan and the courageous people who call the country their home. I’ve been to that war torn part of the world, and I’ll never be the same. The Sudanese need our prayers and support.

I could have shown you grandkids’ pics, but I refrain from posting their photos on the internet. Just know they’re there and they make me smile.

No matter if your work space is at home or away from home, what is unique about where you spend your time?

  1. In my quest for quiet, I hide at the library to write, and even sometimes in my husband’s “Man Cave.” I’ve added a rubber plant in there, some lamps…and a few of my writing books. So far he hasn’t complained. I LOVE your writing space–and the gun mug. I’m with you. I don’t post any photos of my grandchildren on the internet. Thanks for sharing, DiAnn!

  2. My writing space covers parts of two rooms. One former bedroom also serves as an office for paying bills, writing letters, stuffing stuff in the closet and writing. The other bedroom is also the guest room and that is where I have migrated to write. With laptop on lap, body on daybed, I find it easier to concentrate.

  3. I just returned from an eye test, and was sure my sight was worse than the Doctor said it was, and nearly went to get a magnifying glass to see the mess you mentioned. Your “messy” makes a colleague’s desk outstanding in disorderliness. It’s good to have objects other than the computer and the books. My bedroom is my office. I have prayer cards, photo albums (mini ones) a TV do not use, artifacts from my time in West Africa, and appointment cards. They all help to add balance to my time there..

  4. I chuckled at your slightly messy desk comment; for a split second there I thought about sending you a pic or two of my messy desk. Then decided against actually doing that, I didn’t want you feeling that you needed to start pursuing a career change to writing horror. lol

Thanks for the view, and all the great updates.

  5. Your desk is messy??????? Really!!! Looks pretty clean and straight to me. My workspace is wherever I can find a place.

  6. Oh my – – I had to giggle at your comment that your desk is slightly messy – – it looks immaculate to me!! Thank you for sharing this glimpse into your writing space with us. I absolutely LOVE seeing the offices (or main writing areas) for my *favorite* authors. 🙂
I’m very blessed to have my son’s former bedroom (although I find myself wishing he was still a little boy and living at home *sigh*) and have a wonderful desk my husband gave me. He and one of my son-in-laws assembled it and it fits perfectly in a corner next to a window. Since those who know me well know I’m a cat lady through and through, I have numerous cat items on my desk—and often have one or two of my live cats sitting next to my laptop! 😉 Thank you for sharing this with us (and I especially like your Africa items—so very special).

  7. Since we’ve hit the open road, my work space in the RV is the banquette. In Florida (for 4 or 5months) I sit in my recliner in our park model. Since I don’t have lots of room to write, I have to find an area and get it done.

  8. DiAnn, I wish I’d snapped a picture of you working on your laptop while seated in front of the fireplace at the hotel where we recently participated in Weekend With The Writers. I don’t know why you bother having an office. Truly, you do really write anywhere. And we’re better off for it.
