When we’ve been slammed with bad news or rude comments, our first instinct is to either cry, run, or punch someone in the nose. Too many times the situation heads us toward depression.

Not fun.

Being down is like finding yourself at the bottom of a well. It’s dark, smelly, and we’re miserably alone. We’re not even sure we want to crawl out. It’s fine in this dark hole.

In truth, we desperately want relief. And what we really need is a little affirmation that our crumbling world will survive.

heart-462873_1280So what are the 5 things we want to hear when we’re down?

1. You are loved unconditionally.

Love has the ability to overcome every ugly situation.

“The ultimate lesson all of us have to learn is unconditional love, which includes not only others but ourselves as well.” Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13 (ESV)

2. You are a survivor.

To survive any ordeal we need courage, and often someone else has to give us the push up.
“Survival can be summed up in three words – never give up. That’s the heart of it really. Just keep trying.” Bear Grylls

Everyone needs a friend.

Friends help friends.

3. I am praying for you.

Prayer is open communication, and God listens.

“The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.” Soren Kierkegaard

4. You are not alone.

“I think this is what we all want to hear: that we are not alone in hitting the bottom, and that it is possible to come out of that place courageous, beautiful, and strong.”
Anna White, Mended: Thoughts on Life, Love, and Leaps of Faith

5. I’m proud of you and who you are.

Too many people are performance generated. How refreshing to hear we are valued because of who we are.

“Nothing splendid has ever been achieved except by those who dared believe that something inside of them was superior to circumstance.” Bruce Barton

Dr. Seuss has a great pick-me-up.

day-838784You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.
You’re on your own.
And you know what you know.
You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
Dr. Seuss

How do you get back up when life is rough?
