Daydream Believer

Those of you who grew up in the 60s remember Davy Jones and The Monkees sang this tune. John Stewart wrote it, and in December 1967, “Daydream Believer” hit the coveted number one spot on American charts.

I’m a believer in daydreams. I think it’s a prerequisite to becoming a fiction writer. My mind is constantly in story mode, so I’m always thinking, planning, and living my characters’ lives. I’m sane, seriously, and coping with real life is no big deal most of the time. Yet, sometimes I find myself using words belonging to a character or waking up in the middle of the night piecing together my character’s dilemma. My mantra is to walk into my character’s closet and come out as that character.

Oh, the challenges of experiencing life through the hearts and minds of so many. The result is a variety of opinions and motivations pressing against me to see the world in different ways. I don’t have to agree, just weigh the information and make a decision based on what my character might do. And I’m having so much fun.

DaydreamingWhat about you? Do you daydream through the eyes of different characters from books and movies? Does your imagination have a tendency to explore one adventure after another? If so, you might be a novelist. Prepare yourself for the ride of your life!
