Confessions of a Writing-Addict

By DiAnn Mills @DiAnnMills

Confession is supposed to be good for the soul, and I admit to being a writing-addict. Addictions don’t necessarily mean a problem, but they do indicate a dependency, obsession, habit, and enslavement to something. The deciding factor is whether the draw is a good factor for us and those around us. In the case of writing, the answer is YES!

I don’t intend to kick the habit. I like being a writer. Possibly you have the same addiction.

Here are 15 ways to know you can join the band.

  1. Bad grammar is as annoying as fingernails scraping across a chalkboard.
  2. Critique buds are on speed dial.
  3. Daydreaming is a preferred method of passing time.
  4. Drink of choice is predominantly coffee, tea, and caffeine-rich sodas.
  5. Emotion in our writing is as critical as punctuation.
  6. How-to books are devoured like the finest of chocolate.
  7. Laboring over emails, texts, and grocery lists is a part of our chemical makeup.
  8. Life experiences become a story, blog post, devotional, article, nonfiction book or a poem. We include the great and wonderful experiences, and also those happenings that are tragic or bring us to tears.
  9. Movies are a source of how we’d edit or rewrite the script.
  10. Pastors and speakers of all types can inspire whatever we are writing.
  11. Reading is an obsession. If it contains letters that resemble words, then we read it.
  12. We appreciate the label of quirky, bizarre, eccentric, and should be on meds.
  13. Writing conferences are the closest events to heaven that we will ever encounter.
  14. Writing is how we process life. The written word communicates our emotions, humor, insight, wisdom, and quirkiness.
  15. Math is not your forte. 🙂

Okay, if you scored 3 out of 15, you are a part of the writing-addicted crowd. Welcome!

  1. I was almost crushed because I am always writing. I have journals that I plan to leave for my grandkids to know more about who I am. But there were so many categories that I didn’t fit, I thought maybe I’m not a writer after all.
But then when I read 3 out 15, I said, “YES,” I am a writer.
My numbers are 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, &14. In this new day of text messages and the like, I’ve become less concerned with #1.

    1. Rebecca, I’m laughing. Yesterday I told my sweet husband that I needed a vacation. He said you never take a vacation because you always have your computer! Thanks for a giggle.

  2. I confess to being addicted, also.
    Numbers 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 15 fit me perfectly.

Book of Family stories almost complete. Novel – 11 chapters.
Working on a memoir that is about one event.

  3. I’m not writing, but,…..Bad grammar drives me up the wall, I drink COFFEE and have since I was a little girl and I READ most of the time and have done that since I was a little girl. Numbers 3 and 7 also fit me pretty well.
I do have a great idea for a darling character and it could be a series, but, I’m too lazy to tackle it. The first book would most likely be based on a lot of things that have happened in my life…oh well, I suppose that character will just have to go to Heaven with me when I go…since she loves the Word SO much:~)

  4. Guilty. For me, it’s 1,2,4,7,8,11, and 14. I’m even guilty of editing a User’s Manual and sending it back to the company I purchased the product from. I didn’t see editing your spouse’s emails over their shoulders, but that one never fails to get me “that look.”
