Creating Sanctuary Moments: Finding God’s Peace in Everyday Spaces

By DiAnn Mills @DiAnnMills

I’ve come to the season of my life where I can freely admit I’ve spent most of my adult life on a quest to create sanctuary moments. I think most of us carry an unsettling, restless, search for balance which has potential of bringing peace to our souls. While faith is the most important component in achieving lasting soul-satisfaction, reminders of holy contentment can keep us rooted and balanced.

What we choose to symbolize our God-filled spaces depends on our personality. Understanding creating sanctuary moments isn’t about excellence, perfectionism, or performance strengthens our sacred quest. We need reminders in place to pause and inhale tranquility during stressful times. These symbols become a jolt of divine love amid the chaos.

We can be betrayed by thinking the world offers all the satisfaction we need. Or we can embrace the truth.

  • For some, it’s the tie to God that binds and frees us
  • For others it’s the yoke that binds and restricts
  • The first is light and truth; the second burdensome and evil.
  • The first brings the hope of eternal life; the second is an empty pursuit.

Look around you. What instantly shows you that you are united with God in a divine purpose?

  • The love of family
  • A career choice that glorifies God
  • A Bible prominently displayed
  • A cross
  • Music
  • A bouquet of fresh flowers
  • Books that entertain or teach
  • Art
  • Poetry
  • Nature
  • Animals
  • Snapshots of treasured memories

I encourage you to create sanctuary moments with the things that embrace your quest to recognize God’s constant presence.

What do you have in your workplace or home that restores your weary soul?

  1. My Bird feeders connect me to the promise of Gods provision in my life. I love seeing the different birds that seek out their daily seeds. It’s a huge God wink when a red bird appears.

  2. I desperately needed to be reminded of this today. Thank you! That’s why I rearranged my office, to look outside and see God’s handiwork in nature. I find a sense of peace and hope watching the animals and weather changes. ~ Kathryn

  3. I find that singing, listening to, or reflecting on the old hymns that speak of who God is, or reading the Psalms restores my soul; or waking in the night with a song on my heart, for truly He “giveth songs in the night.”

  4. My Bible.
Thank you for these messages. They are appreciated.
We never hear enough of our Lord and Saviour. Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

  5. Books… In the evening after a full day of work, my favorite thing is to retired to my bedroom & read a Christian fiction book. Ain’t nuthin’ on TV worth watching these days.

Bible Study with my Sisters-in-Christ… currently we are doing a study on Heaven by Jennifer Rothschild. What a blessing it is to spend time with these godly women and study God’s Word!!

  6. Scrolling through the photos and videos on my phone of our precious grandchildren restores my soul. And thanking God for the blessings He gives us through them.

Talking with God during my walks outside each morning and wondering anew at His creation restores peace.

Sanctuary moments- I find I have been blessed to have many. Family, nature and an extra special feeling I get when I go into a church sanctuary, when no others are present. It’s this quiet one on one like no other. Recently a group from church visited the Lanier Theological Library. Everything there felt like a piece of heaven, the stone chapel, the stunning library and most of all the beautiful grounds. It certainly calmed a weary soul.
Thank you for always giving us such amazing food for thought, mind and soul. Blessings

  10. 1) Meditating on Gods promises never fails to bring peace

    2) Reading commentary (BibleHub is my fave) and teaching points regarding Gods attributes, characteristics, and awesome power instill peace and wonder

    3) Music playlist of my faves and praise & worship songs

    4) Looking back (remembering) at how God has moved mightily brings peace and great joy

    5) Knowing that we win now and at the end (in the book of Revelation) of the age is uplifting and encouraging, and instills the peace of hope

      1. I’m learning to transform other’s spiritual journey like you, DiAnn. Your way with words, your comments, your encouragement is uplifting, persistent, and stirs this group up. Is why we keep coming back. Sorry to speak twice. Give others a turn.
