Who’s the Boss?

By DiAnn Mills @DiAnn Mills

Every time I begin a new writing project, I panic. Can I do this again? Do I have the skills to carry another book through to completion? Will my readers like the characters? Is my plot credible enough with twists and turns to keep readers guessing? Will my story linger in the hearts of my readers long after the last sentence?

Then I remembered my Boss.

I bet many of you thought writing was free of the worries and hassles of a boss. No clocking in. No staying late or arriving early. No hassle from anyone. I thought so too, until I discovered all the demands made on my time and effort: publishers, agents, editors, social media, writing, and family responsibilities.

Then I remembered my Boss.

The One who called me into the writing ministry. No deadlines. No expectations. No pressure.

In the beginning, the idea of making a difference in the world through writing stories seemed like a dream. The urge and passion to communicate through the written word became so powerful that I didn’t know what to do with it.

  •            It was power.
  •            It was passion.
  •            It was alive.
  •            It was undeniable.

A realization grew deep inside me that this newfound urgency came from outside of me. God had called me to writing, but I had the responsibility of learning the craft. I didn’t automatically get the techniques and tools to succeed. After over two decades of writing and publishing, I’m constantly learning.

For the record, God didn’t provide a timetable for my publishing either.  Growth came in seasons—and often in waiting.

This wild, sweet gift of writing is a lot like the road David walked in the Bible. He discovered his Boss at a young age, and he clung to Him all the days of his life.

  1. David didn’t take the throne immediately. He had much to learn.
  2. David battled lions and bears to build strength, courage, and endurance.
  3. David’s family probably didn’t understand who he was or what he was attempting to accomplish.
  4. David fought Goliath, much like we face the giants of publishing. He used his skills and trusted God.
  5. David faced rejection from Saul, his wife, and those he thought were his friends and family.
  6. David made mistakes and had to ask for forgiveness.
  7. David never gave up. He had hope, which means he waited for the Lord to fulfill His promises. What about you? Where is your hope and commitment in your deeply hidden dreams?

And that waiting shaped him into the man God intended.

Writers use words to entertain, inspire, and teach. Like David, we can dream, learn, obey, and reach our purpose. When fear rises, deadlines press, and doubt whispers, I return to God’s promise: I’m not writing alone. I answer to the One who called me — and that changes everything.

So I ask you, who is your Boss?

  1. We are walking the same journey. The Holy Spirit clearly called me to write and I have followed in obedience. What surprised me was the onslaught of unrelenting spiritual attacks from the enemy. Confirmation I am on the right path, I suppose. But I have faced numerous challenges and persecution. I get so weary sometimes. Yet I keep my eye on the eternal and trust I am making a difference for the Kingdom. You have been a great source of encouragement and wisdom for me. I thank God for you over and over.

Kim, I appreciate your words of wisdom. Yes, I am always spiritually attacked when I’m on a project for the Lord. He is our shield! Christian community means we don’t have to face challenges alone.

  2. This post helped me a lot! I’ve been afraid to write because I‘m afraid that I’ll fail and realize that my dream of writing isn’t for me. But God is the one who inspired this dream, so He‘ll grow me and help me along the way! Thank you for that reminder!

  3. Dear DiAnn,
What a coincidence that you posted this, as I’m in the process of hybrid self-publishing my debut novel, “The Summer of Mended Hearts.” It’s even more difficult for me since I’m disabled and need help to do a lot of the launch tasks. Fortunately, my family is providing support, though I fear my about my reach. But then I remember, “God can do anything” even more than I can or imagine. I just need to remain faithful

  4. Thank you for this reminder, DiAnn. An affirmation right when I needed it.

I’m also studying your book, MASTERING THE ART OF WRITING FICTION. It is amazing and a great help at this time in my writing life. Bless you!

  5. DiAnn,
Thanks for reminding us that no matter what we are doing, God is in charge. If we rely on his promises that He is always with us, we can learn and grow as David did. Nothing in life comes easy, but we can work at becoming better writers and better human beings.
As always, you are an inspiration and a great role model.

  6. DiAnn, you are so talented, amazing and inspiring. Thank you for connecting with your friends and followers. Early in my life I wanted to be a writer. But life took me on a journey that didn’t include writing so all these many years I have enjoyed reading and learning from others. Thank you again for staying connected and being an inspiration.

  7. How timely! I came to a mountainous area with my husband, with the intent of getting some writing done. My husband wandered off to take pictures and I sat down at a picnic table in the middle of God’s creation. And then…nothing! No words, no ideas, nothing except a brand new blank notebook and pencil.

On our drive back to our lodging, I commented to my husband that I loved seeing the natural color palettes created by God in the striations in the mountains. Maybe The Boss is urging me to use this time to be creative through art!

God really is the boss! He sure knows the time, place and needs. I get in
His way just by being impatient. We have to let go and let God.
I’m certainly working on this. That is a choice and a way.
    Thank you for sharing this!!

  9. I’ve been waiting for some news about how to proceed with a health issue and now that plans are being made I feel so much lighter. Even though nothing is resolved. Funny how hope and optimism and forward movement make such a mental difference.

God is the Boss of every aspect of my life, not only what I write. I needed this reminder, DiAnn.
    Thank you!

    2. Judy,
I bet you do some amazing, special things that come so naturally you don’t even realize they are special to someone else.

  11. I’ve found myself sleeping and resting more since I retired; supposedly to become a full time writer. When I have my prayer time and start to confess my “laziness,” I feel a gentle stirring, as if God is telling me, “You’re not being lazy. I want you to rest.” It’s a little confusing sometimes because I feel like I should be up and doing and writing, but God always lets me know, “it’s okay to rest and enjoy time with the dogs I put in your care.”

Like you said, He’s the Boss. If He says to rest, then that’s what I’ll do. (But He does allow me some writing and editing time).

Thanks, Debbie, relaxing in God’s arms is the perfect place to be – but sometimes we have to experience the consequences of our poor choices to realized what we’ve been missing.

  12. DiAnn,
God’s timing is always perfect—your blog arrived just in time. 😊
I gave myself a completion deadline for a cozy mystery I’m in the process of writing. And I haven’t met my deadline. Instead of focusing on my Boss and His timing, I’ve grumbled and pushed myself along to finish. To no avail.
Thank You for reminding me He is the One who is my Guide—not a date on the calendar. 😊
