Why Getting Outside is Good for You

When we were kids, we couldn’t wait to get outside. A sunshine-filled day exploded when we opened our doors, and we were energized. We laughed, played, and our spirits lifted higher than the tree tops. What happened to the kid in us who felt better with the sky as our ceiling and green grass tickling between our toes?

We thought we outgrew the need for nature, but our mind and bodies still crave it. If you thought the adult in you should stifle those adventurous feelings, here are 5 reasons not to –

  1. The kid in you is still there. Let the outside be our playground. Spending time in nature sparks our creativity and imagination. Everywhere we look, we see God’s handiwork, and we’re inspired no matter what we’re doing.
  2. Vitamin D explosion. Our mothers said vitamin D was good for us, and science has proven it helps relieve stress and some studies stay it can lower our blood pressure. When we don’t receive enough Vitamin D, our bodies respond with a variety of diseases. Wow, sun and fun battles stress and body mess. Don’t forget the sunscreen.
  3. Exercise. Some people love exercise and some dread it. But we all need exercise to stay physically and emotionally fit. Our bones and body will thank us. And if we want to shed a few pounds, those outside excursions can trim us down.
  4. Mental alertness is a key to functioning well in today’s world. When our minds are blasted with problems, a crisis, news releases, and all the other stimuli our devices send to our attention, we aren’t able to focus on what’s important. Why not free up our minds and streamline a path to relaxation.
  5. Enjoyment. Breathe in and out. The list of all we can do outside is never-ending. Those few moments to sit, walk, or scale a mountain are pure entertainment, and if that’s our only reason to venture outside, it’s a good one.
